June Medical Camp At The Children Wellness Center

June 24 to June 27, was the second quarterly Ubuntu medical camp. The clinic was run by neurology nurse practitioner  and a foundation board member  for the duration of the week. This is a great blessing to be able to use their skills to assist our kids quarterly! They would assess 71 of the 269 participants in the neurology programme at the Foundation and its satellite facility at Thigio.

We were extremely grateful to them as they brought 1000 tablets of Zonegran, an extremely efficient seizure-controlling drug that is not easily accessible in Kenya. Our clientele will benefit from this drug being added to our catalog due to the effectiveness of the medication. Additionally, with the help of one of our Tribe member we were able to secure an EEG(Electroencephalogram) machine. An EEG is an important test for epilepsy diagnosis. Currently in Kenya the approximate cost of a standard EEG is Ksh 6,000 ($47). For the majority of our clients, this makes it unaffordable. An EEG is essential to the treatment of patients in which the seizure pattern alters. We had to outsource this equipment because it was not available at our facility; as a result, we were tirelessly looking for an EEG for the facility.

Toshia McKeon has been instrumental in obtaining the EEG machine and training a team member to do the test at our facility. This will help many of our patients improve on their seizure control and lower our clients' imaging expenses. Despite the recent tragic occurrences in the area and the turmoil across the country, we are appreciative of Toshia and Beth's dedication to our patients outcomes and for accepting the invitation to visit our clinic.
