Ubuntu Parents Retreat at Lake Naivasha Resort

Lake Naivasha Resort is a part of a hotel chain called Superior Hotels Group and we cannot thank them enough for their continued partnership and support to Ubuntu and the families here. Here in Kenya much like all over the world taking care of children who are differently abled can be a monumental task and it requires strong parents to do so. Here in Kenya though what we find is that the support system for such parents is quite low. Whether it is support from inside the household or from the extended family or the government. This means that it can be a long and lonely journey for some of the parents. Unfortunately we find that some parents even give up and will either abandon the child in the home and leave or abandon the child elsewhere! Luckily we have some of the most loving and dedicated parents anywhere. We have parents who before we got our bus would walk 3 miles with their children on their back just to ensure that they have gone to school or attended their therapy session. So we took this opportunity to give these amazing parents a little bit of rest and relaxation as their kids were away having the time of their lives. According to the Kamili Mental Health Organization of the people who said they had felt stress at some point in their lives, 16% had self-harmed, and 32% said they had had suicidal thoughts and feelings. 37% of adults who reported feeling stressed reported feeling lonely as a result. This is the harsh reality we face everyday. While we look to help our kids as much as possible ensuring that they have a well balanced home is part of that care, and allowing the parents an avenue to relieve their stress is what we aim to do. This also allowed us to show the parents just how much we appreciate their contributions to the care of our amazing kids. We can only do so much and then the rest is down to the parents and the care they provide at home, so again we wanted to show all of them our appreciation and from the bottom of our hearts. Again none of this would be possible without the love and support of superior hotels groups as this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for some parents and for that we are eternally grateful.
